We'd hired a car to get us to San Francisco by Thursday afternoon. Having spent Tuesday night in Flagstaff, AZ, we now had about two days to drive across. We started off with a bit of a detour to Sedona, which Joe had suggested from thumbing through our Lonely Planet. It was worth the visit to see the amazing red rock formations! From there we continued on through Arizona towards the Californian border. We slowly got used to driving on the right hand side too – although whoever was driving often would head for the wrong side of the car to get in! Along the interstates and highways we saw the landscape change dramatically from flat desert to wooded slopes, into rocky outcrops and green fields. We even saw some tumble weed along the road, as well as cactus and Joshua trees.
We took a quick break just over the Californian border at Needles where we got some info about the Mohave National Preserve so decided to take another detour through there. The landscape was really different with granite mountains, sand dunes and volcanic rock cones. We were just driving out of the Preserve as the sun set over the desert.
We pushed on for a couple more hours of driving to spend the night in Bakersfield, CA. This was merely a logistical stop as it meant less driving the following day to SF. By the end of the Thursday we were pretty happy to get rid of the car. It had been great to travel across that way and see some amazing things, but we had spent a lot of time in the car! Em was the lucky one to drive into San Francisco, the highways take you a long way into the city, and then a crazy elevated angled bridge exit dropped us into the city streets, where Em tried to pull around cars blocking us with very little awareness where the other side of the car actually was!
Car gone, we found the nearest Starbucks (not far to find one!) to regroup and relax a bit, before meeting up with Em's friend Jordan… our last few days of the trip to be spent in what would be one of our favourite stops!
