The Capitol

Sitting in NYC now so thought better post about our time in DC. Was a great few days there – plenty to see and even better that most of it is free!

The first day we covered a lot of the monuments and the Mall, starting at Arlington Cemetery, and then walking between the Lincoln Memorial (also standing on the spot Martin Luther King gave his 'I have a dream' speech), the Vietnam and Korea Memorials, along the reflecting pool to the World War II memorial and the Washington Monument before wandering over to the White House and then popped into the American History museum, before the FDR and Jefferson monuments at night.

Next day we started at the Capitol building, and then the Library of Congress, with a quick pass by the Supreme Court, before a bit of time in the Air and Space Museum. Being Halloween, we joined a pub crawl from our hostel to Adams-Morgan that night and joined in the almost street party feel there, stopping between a few bars/clubs filled with people in costumes. Our guide brought along a few costumes bits for us to join in - it was a big night! 

Sunday was a not so hectic – we had a wander around Dupont Circle (shops and along Embassy Row), and then went up the Washington Monument for some great views over the Mall and city, before having a look at the originals of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights at the National Archives, and a quick stroll through the Portrait Gallery.

So, even though all that felt like a lot to cover – it was only the tip of the iceberg of all the Smithsonians, galleries and museums in DC! Was a bit of government and history overload for the brain, but was amazing to see it all.
